OPN: How does it feel to have such esteemed Rank in such tough and competitive exams? How much hopeful were you for such Rank?
Dr Sharma: It feels great . I was hopeful to accommodate in top 20, but I was not sure of securing the 2nd rank. It was a surprise to me (You can just dream of the position, but getting there is not only hard work, its little bit of luck too..!)
OPN: Who would you like to share your credit of success with? Any role models in your life?
Dr Sharma: I would like to thank my family and friends for their support and encouragement to achieve. I used to see many of my seniors with their hard work and perseverance getting top ranks and securing their position for desired spot for residency .
OPN: Please share your brief story after internship completion till the PG success day.
Dr Sharma: After internship completion, I worked for Nepal government under contract in one of the rural hospitals. Meanwhile, I was determined to prepare for Loksewa and got an entry. After which I started watching KAPLAN VIDEO lectures and notes that played a major role in forming a foundation of my knowledge of Basic Science . After completion of 2 years of Government Services, I decided to appear for NAMS and prepared for few months. Through out this journey, there were highs and few instances where I felt low but I did not give up.
OPN: How tough are entrance exams these days? How should an aspirant choose a smart way to excel?
Dr Sharma: I suppose entrance examinations are getting tougher these days. We should make sure to be smart enough to choose right resources to prepare and devote time for PG preparation as much as possible, because getting there is all about working hard and being determined of your goal.
OPN: What are the books and other resources you used for entrance preparation?
Dr Sharma: First Aid for USMLE Step 1, Kaplan Lecture videos (for Basic Science ), Online PG Nepal mock tests (for exam simulation) with Questions and Explanations, AIPGMEE Mudit Khanna, Complete Review MD/MS Sujit Jha,
OPN: What advice would you like to give to future PG aspirants?
Dr Sharma: I would advice PG aspirants to work hard as there is no shortcut to success ; its a long and tortuous journey, so make sure to make plans, be determined and focused regarding your goal .
OPN: What is adequate period of study and daily study hour?
Dr Sharma: A dedicated study period of 3-4 months would suffice, but it depends; study hour of 12-14 hrs/day on average would be good.
OPN: 1 month before exam, what shall students focus on?
Dr Sharma: A month before exam , its mandatory that one should understand their weak areas and focus on them more ; make sure to avoid silly mistakes and master simple and high yield concepts. Revision is a must during this period, Revise as much as u can .
OPN: How can aspirants parallel their PG preparation and job together? How difficult is it being a government officer?
Dr Sharma: Its challenging to balance work and study together . I was lucky enough to have supportive staffs at my hospital that I could devote my time for study in the last 3 months. Its quite difficult to parallel work and study, but PG preparation needs devotion and hard work so one needs to give as much time possible for study and be consistent with preparation .
OPN: How can an aspirant prepare smart to excel competitive exams? Any tips about reading habit, memorizing and practicing technique?
Dr Sharma: Making notes /formulas/mnemonics, focusing on grabbing important concepts rather than just mugging up/Revising / Focusing on weak points /Being consistent with preparation.
