JCAT is Joint Centralized Admission Test for MD/MS under central induction policy (CIP) of Punjab Residency Program (PRP).


Entrance Exam Date, Timing & Pattern:

JCAT is organized four times a year in month of February, April, August and October in Lahore. It is not organized in Nepal. Applications are opened about one month before exam and published in www.kemu.edu.pk


Exam of 125 MCQs having 250 marks (2 for each MCQ & no negative marking) is taken with

55 MCQs from Basic medical science (About 16 MCQs each from Anatomy & Pathology; 8 MCQs each from Pharma, Physio&Biochem)

  • 30 MCQs from Medicine & Allieds (20 from Medicine, 10 from Paedia)

  • 40 MCQs from Surgery & Allieds (20 from Surgery

  • 10 from Obs/ Gynae

  • 5 each from ENT &Ophthalmo).

It is one of the toughest exam having pass percentage of only about 15 to 20%.


You need to secure 60% i.e. total of 150 marks for eligible to apply in CIP portal of PRP held twice a year in January & July.


Selection Procedure:

Selection is under CIP portal of PRP which is an automatic & transparent computer based selection process based on merit of aggregate mark designed by Punjab Information Technology Board, Government of Punjab.


CIP online portal is opened in PRP site www.prp.punjab.gov.pk twice a year in Jan & July. You should fill up your subject of your choice accordingly in order and other details asked in online portal.


Aggregate Mark Calculation:Among 100 marks

  • 40 marks for JCAT

  • 20 marks for MBBS degree

  • 5 mark for attempts (not counted for foreign)

  • 5 mark for graduation in public institute of Pakistan (Not counted for Nepalese graduated from Nepal)

  • 2.5 mark for house job from public institute of Pakistan (Not counted for Nepalese graduated from Nepal)

  • 2.5 mark for parent institution (Not counted for Nepalese graduated from Nepal)

  • 5 mark for research paper (max. 2 research paper each carrying 2.5 mark)

  • 6 mark for distinction in MBBS (in max. 3 subjects each carrying 2 mark)

  • 14 marks for working experience only in Pakistan


Seats & Duration of Course:

They provide 2% of total seats to foreign student which is equal to about 10 to 15 seats for each Jan & July intake.

General Medicine, Paediatric, Radiology, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Opthalmology, ENT, Obs/ Gyanae are of 4 years programs & others specialities are of 5 years programs. 


Books & Resources:

The books to follow are:

  • FIRST AID USMLE STEP 1 (Primary book for all MD/ MS entrance exam) Do study each and every word of this book & revise as many times as possible before you sits in the exam.

  • Snell Anatomy Review

  • Pathoma for Pathology

  • Gateway to MD/ MS by Dr. Muhammad Ahmad

  • Be clear on emergency cases and common cases according to syllabus from any short book for ENT, Eye, Obs/ Gynae, Paeds, Medicine and Surgery.


My Sources of study were FIRST AID USMLE STEP 1 (I enjoyed revising it multiple times studying each and every words finishing it in 2 days), Pathoma, Gateway to MD/ MS for past questions of JCAT. MUDIT, AIIMS review of Amit Ashish & PGI review of Manoj Chaudhary provide me deep knowledge in all subjects.


High yield MCQs asked in Online PG Nepal model test and extra edge explanation provided were also of great help.


How to apply:

Applications are opened about one month before exam and published in www.kemu.edu.pk . You can download the application form for JCAT from this site, fill it up and send it to KEMU, Lahore by currier or you can request to any of your senior resident studying there to fill up the form.


The examination fee for JCAT is around NRS 3000.

Visa costs about NRS 4000, you can get visa within 2 to 3 days of applying it.

Documents required are MBBS degree certificate, NMC license certificate in place of PMDC certificate, internship completion certificate in place of house job certificate, Passport. You don’t need any NOC from MOE and MOFA for JCAT. It is needed only after selection and admission.



  • You can choose any subject of your choice of MD/ MS in CIP Portal of PRP.

  • The degree is equivalent with MD/ MS Nepal, no problems with NMC and better job opportunity later on.

  • Stipend is minimum NRS 70,000 to 80,000 (Expected pay raise upto 1 lakh from July 2019) per month.

  • MD/ MS degree of Pakistan is on the way of recognizing as residency and speciality in UK and can work there freely thereafter.

  • You can be registered as consultant without any licensing examination in all gulf Arab countries.

  • You have no tension of bond of Government of Nepal after PG.



  • You have to go Lahore to attend JCAT.

  • The course should be completed in Government hospital of Punjab after selection of CIP portal of PRP.
